Geosmin’s Redo Sustainability Index

Geosmin is a sustainable bath and home products brand, which makes sound amplifiers, cutlery, notebooks, loofahs, combs, bags, etc. All their products are made ecologically and they rate 4.3 on our Redo Sustainability Index. Let’s see why they deserve a 4.3 on 5 rating.
Picture
Geosmin has a whole range of products that are sourced from Assam, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, etc., where the raw materials are available and they try to work with the local artisans–this way it strengthens micro economy and also reduces the carbon footprint. Therefore, in ‘made of’ aka ingredients it’s a 1.5 on 1.5.
Picture
They use corrugated boxes and paper tapes to pack their orders. Moreover, they use one sided paper to print the shipping labels. We gave them 0.5 out of 0.5 for packaging.
Geosmin does not have salaried artisans and pays their artisan on a per product basis. They make sure all of them are paid minimum wage according to the government regulations in that area. Some of their associates are fair trade registered. That’s why giving them  1 on 1 in ‘made by’ aka living wages.
To talk about their working conditions and operations, their score is a 0.8 out of 1. Let us explain why it is 0.8 and not a round figure. We gave them 0.5 on 0.5 in factory conditions as the pictures speak for themselves; a 0.3 on 0.5 for operations of the factory on hand-held tools. Yes, their products are made with hand-held tools and not non-renewables powered machinery. We only deducted 0.2 for transportation, which uses vehicles that emit pollution. This is by far, our highest rating in ‘made in.’
We gave them 0.5 on 0.5 in waste management as they do not create any trash or chemical waste and the rest of their waste is 100% compostable.

Geosmin has a return policy for any physical damages. They do not offer any discounts on that. We gave them a 0 on 0.5 in buyback/repair policy.

And that’s how we reached a 4.3 on 5. Hope you had a good time reading this and understanding how Geosmin operates a ‘good’ brand while managing artisan relationships in so many places.

Picture
Arture uses cork sourced from the Mediterranean as the main component for their products. They use an Indian organic cotton lining. The glue they use is a mixture of synthetic and water based glues sourced within India. Their threads are polyester and are sourced from abroad. That’s why we have given them 1 out of 1.5 in ‘made of’ aka ingredients.
Picture
Their products are packed in reusable cotton bags upcycled out of leftover factory waste. Arture’s tags are made from recycled kraft paper. Both, the bags and tags, are screen printed. We gave them 0.5 out of 0.5 for packaging.
Arture employs skilled artisans from Chennai. The company claims that they are paid a fair wage. That’s why we have given a 1 on 1 rating to Arture in ‘made by’ aka living wages of labour. They work in a factory which provides a clean and safe environment. Arture wishes to use renewable energy in their production and transportation when possible. Hence, we have given them 0.5 out of 1 in ‘made in’ aka factory conditions and operations. A very small amount of trimmings are left behind and saved from the cork as well as cotton used in manufacturing. That’s why we have given Arture 0.5 on 0.5 in waste management.
Arture has a buy back policy launched earlier in 2020. According to this policy, you can return products purchased from their events, website, and other stockists. In return, you get a 20% discount on future purchases. The returned products are broken down to their components and that is used in their Afterlife range of products. We gave Arture 0.5 on 0.5 for having a buy back policy in place.

And that's how we reached on an of  4 on 5. Hope, you had a good time reading our report and understanding how to build a brand that is good from the inside and out.
